You are invited to our virtual AAC Magicians summer camp for the week of 24 August 2020. This camp is for AAC users 8 years old and older. During lockdown we’ve had a bit of time to think about how voice output AAC systems can be used to do a bit of magic; we’ve come up with some tricks to astound and amaze!
Each day there will be an hour session, either in the morning or afternoon. The camper and their camper supporter will see magic tricks as a group then break out into individual rooms to edit, customise and practice doing tricks themselves. On the final day of the camp we will hold a magic show where campers can show off all their hard work. This camp will be held via the zoom video conferencing platform.
Each camper will need to have a camp supporter that will be able to either make the magic trick activity pages in the software they use (e.g., Compass, Communicator 5, etc.) or upload and edit the magic trick gridsets created in Smartbox’s Grid 3 communication software. This camp supporter will need to attend all daily sessions with the camper to help them develop their magical skills. The support the camp supporter provides can be virtual or 'in person'.
The Camp Director will be a ‘magic coach’ advising camp supporters and encouraging campers during their daily sessions.
Also supporting the camp will be AAC Camp Mentors. If campers wish, these AAC mentors will drop in to individual sessions and provide feedback. These mentors will also be giving feedback to the camp director on ways to improve this and future camps. On Day 4 there will be an “Ask Me Anything” session where campers and camp supporters can interview the mentors about anything-including AAC!
