AAC CAMP

Camps are about having fun and making friends. It all starts, however with  funding; until adequate funding is in place, we'll be holding online events, like AAC HEADS, to bring the AAC community together.

Once our funding is in place, we will be recruiting for all the following roles.  Contact us to keep up to date on our funding progress.

CAMP ROLES

CAMPERS:
  • this camp will be for children 6-19 years old
  • no requirements for level of functioning but must be able to participate
  • behaviour must not impact on the other campers' experience
  • must have an AAC system in place (low or high tech)

To support the camper, several different roles are needed:
TRAINERS:
  • paired 1:1 with a camper
  • usually knows the camper in a professional capacity (teacher, teaching assistant, SLT)
  • sets targets for improving communication and, along with the members of the cluster group, creates communication activities in the Saturday and Sunday before camp starts
  • In the mornings the trainer facilitates development and use of the AAC system
  • In the afternoons the trainer attends classes led by one of the cluster leaders

CLUSTER LEADERS:
  • coordinates between their cluster and the rest of the camp
  • leads the trainers in their cluster in supervision
  • lectures one afternoon on an AAC topic (assessment, literacy, access, choosing an AAC system)

CAMP COUNSELORS:
  • volunteers trained in hoisting and personal care, supported by a personal care team.
  • the counsellor will attend the camp activities (horseback riding, swimming, etc.) with the camper and support as necessary as the camper participates
  • supports the daily AAC activities designed by the trainer

AAC MENTORS:
  • adults who uses AAC
  • supports camp activities during the day
  • shares their personal journey through AAC with the trainers in the evenings

A camp for people who use aac

AAC CAMP UK will have outdoor activities but indoor as well (it is the UK after all.) Horseback riding, boating. fishing, rock climbing, swimming and more! We've been in discussions with the Calvert Trust Exmoor to host the camp. They come highly recommended and have over 20 years of practice in accessible activities for young people.

A camp for professionals supporting them

Each camper will be paired with counsellor who will assess the AAC needs of the camper and create activities to support them during the week.  These counsllors will also have tutorials on AAC topics, like assessment, access, literacy and more. It's summer camp meets summer school.

A camp for everyone else while giving parents a rest

There's lots of different ways to get involved in an AAC Camp: AAC suppliers can give AAC product support. Older AAC users can attend camp as mentors, Even siblings can come- BUT not parents. We're hoping the camp will give them a well earned break.  Besides, it's not really a summer camp if the parents come:)
